WSDOT Incident Response Highlights Posted 8-12-2002
August 3, 2002 - Around 11:40 a.m. an empty log truck turning left from State Route 7, the Mountain Highway, onto 340th Street East collided with a 2001 dodge pickup towing a large boat also headed south. While the exact cause of the collision is in dispute, the truck towing the boat lost its load during the accident. The boat was knocked from the trailer sending it crashing into a highway guard rail. While there were no injuries, the hull of the boat was severly damaged. The destroyed boat was returned to the owner. The driver was issued several citations for improper carrier insurance, and interstate commercial transporting with out permits. . . . (the story continues)
What do you think went wrong here?? Only a few things went wrong, the transporter did have insurance, unfortunately it was personal liability and did not cover things carried for customers. Worsely, even with the correct insurance to cover the customers boat, the permits were not filed, so the insurance company is not required to pay for damages. We can only assume the owner of this boat, chose a transporter to move their boat for a discounted price, the carrier we know cut corners to save a few dollars and make a profit, and in the end the boat needed $20,000.00 dollars of repair. That bill goes to the boat owner. BAD CHOICE!!
One thing to remember, the Federal Government has Regulations governing interstate transport of boats, cars, and other valuables. In this accident, the transporter had the right insurance, but did not have the correct DOT Certificates. As a result, the $20,000.00 damages were not covered by the transporters insurance company. The transporter either ignored this information or was neglegent. To date, the owner has not been reimburesd for their losses. Don't Let This Happen To You.
